Member Spotlight

Kara Blue

Company: Childress Klein

Background: I graduated from Appalachian State University with a Communications degree In 2013, I was hired by Childress Klein as the Tenant Services Coordinator for the suburban portfolio. Fast-forward 4.5 years, I am currently a Property Manager in the suburban portfolio, managing 7 Class A office buildings in the Fort Mill area.

Favorite mentor: My boss, Jeff Crane (Jeff, reviews are this month, right?). Joking aside, I've enjoyed learning the business from Jeff. He has a strong understanding of the building 'guts' and is always willing to explain how things work. Jeff encourages his team to grow professionally through seminars and classes. He suggested I work towards my RPA, which is the reason I became a BOMA member.

Best advice for emerging professionalsDon't be afraid to reach out to 'veterans' in the industry. Most people are happy to meet and answer any questions or share their career path. Grow your network. You never know who can help you in the future.

Most valuable skill for a career in property management:
Patience! Things rarely go according to plan. Whether you're dealing with unforeseen construction issues or someone accidentally driving through your building, you must be able to adapt and keep moving.

Favorite aspect of a career in property management: I love the variety of desk time, meeting tenants/vendors and walking the properties. How many times have we said it, no day is ever the same.

Interesting story/challenge: One owner wanted to build a circular wood deck around a large existing tree, overlooking the business park pond. We teamed up with Bland Landscaping to tackle the unusual request. It was a learning experience for all of us. The deck turned out beautifully and we even had a tenant get married there (at 9am on a Thursday morning)!

Fun fact: I am halfway through a Master's degree in Real Estate Finance & Development at UNC Charlotte.

Favorite thing about Charlotte: Charlotte's got a lot. There is a strong sense of community, which has kept me here. I also enjoy the many breweries and music scene.

August 21 luncheon | Byron's Southend

Join us as we hear from Ken Joyner, County Assessor and Christina Lantis, Assistant Assessor as they discuss the pending 2019 property revaluation.

Also at the August luncheon, the Community Outreach Committee will launch a Pet Food Drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.

Presently there is a need for new and unopened dry and canned pet food.  Cash donations will also be accepted at the luncheon.

Second Harvest is requesting that donations not include items for our furry friends such as used bedding, toys and opened products.
