A letter from the President, Elizabeth Fulk:
While we are still in the hottest heat of Summer, it seems strange to start talking about January of 2022, but that is when next year's Board of Directors begin their term, and that process begins now.
For a bit of education about this process:
The Board of Directors positions can be held by Principal Members, with the exception of the Allied Member representative (who will be selected in January by the Allied Committee, which is comprised of one representative from each Annual Sponsor, plus two At-Large Allied Members.)
The nominations for Board of Directors may include current board members, or those not currently serving. Nominations for Board of Director positions are now open; you can either self nominate or nominate another BOMA member here.
When the nomination period ends, the Nominating Committee reviews the submissions, and presents all names to the current board, along with their recommendation for next year's slate. The Board of Directors must approve the slate, which is then presented at the Annual Membership Meeting for vote. Voting members are identified as one designated representative from each of our Principal Member companies. If you are that individual, we will reach out to you regarding the vote or to get your proxy for another member from your company. If you've never considered serving on a board, here are a few reasons why you may want to think about this uniquely rewarding experience:
- Serving on a board and bringing your knowledge, energy and expertise to the table is something that can not only benefit the organization, but you as well.
- It provides an opportunity to develop and grow as a leader, enhance your professional circle, cultivate new skill sets and expand your network of peers.
- The experience of dealing with others as it relates to issues of leadership, finance and other business areas will teach you about diplomacy. Simply listening to others in Board meetings will provide you cross-functional information on ways to approach problems and find new solutions.
"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much" -Helen KellerIn addition to nominations for the Board of Directors, we would also like you to recommend members for our annual awards - Principal Member of the Year, the Allied Member of the Year and the Committee Volunteer of the Year (which can be someone serving on any committee). Think about who you know that's deserving of this recognition and take the time to do so! Award Nominations are open here.If you want to know more, or have any questions, please reach out to Crystal Smyth, BAE, to me, Elizabeth Fulk, or to any of our board members.
- A board role shows others in your industry that you are a front runner in your field and well-equipped to help shape the future of an organization.
Stay safe and well!
