Background: I am originally from Florida, then lived in New York for about 10 years before moving to Charlotte in 2009. I have toured the country (and Canada!) for work and also did about a year in Northern California on contract. I worked in entertainment for 22 years before breaking into the Property Management field in 2017.
Favorite mentor: I can't single out one person, but instead, an experience I had early on. I did an internship in college with the Williamstown Theatre Festival and was able to meet and work with a lot of great people who helped shape my career path. While theatre may seem an odd start to where I am now, the staff and designers there were more about following the path that made you happy.
Best advice for emerging professionals: Build relationships. I have already seen a great return from investing in the people I work with and my tenants. By listening and engaging, you will be better prepared to respond to the tough situations in a way that is comfortable and familiar to them. This helps to diffuse and manage things that could easily get out of hand if you do not have that common ground.
Most valuable skill needed for career in property management: Creative problem solving and a fully charged phone. In 2+ years on the job I have encountered situations that people doing this their whole life have never seen. Finding a way to keep things running smoothly is key and often means figuring it out on the fly with the help of your Industry friends!
Fun fact: I once cheered on the US Women's Curling team in Torino, Italy.
Favorite thing about Charlotte: Watching the city continue to grow and evolve. It's a lot of fun to be part of!
