Member Spotlight: Heather Hopkins

Company: Lincoln Harris

Background: I grew up in Connecticut and then 6 years ago made the amazing decision to relocate to Charlotte.  I began my career in Property Manager at Grubb & Ellis (now Newmark Grubb Knight Frank) as a Purchasing Manager, eventually also taking on Contracts and Tenant Services.  Upon relocating to Charlotte, I was hired at Lincoln Harris as the Assistant Facility Manager on the Hendrick Automotive Group account and eventually transitioned over to the Atrium HealthCare account as a Facility Manager.  While at Lincoln Harris, I have also completed my undergraduate degree in History at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.

Favorite Mentor: It is really hard to pick just one person.  I think throughout my life I have been fortunate enough to learn so much from so many people that have really helped me to create my own persona and ideas.  That being said, my current manager, Sherri Commander, has been more than a mentor.  She has taught me so much about work-life balance and what it means to be a great manager.  She has given me so much room to grow and taught me how to be an advocate for myself.  I cannot even say enough about what a wonderful person, mentor and friend she is other than I would not be half the Facility Manager that I am today without her.

Best Advice for Emerging Professionals: Definitely be proactive instead of reactive.  Typically the tenant/client is already fired up, no need to add to the fire.  Be calm.  Be rational.  Be resourceful and remind them why they hired you.  And do not be afraid to ask for what you want, whether it be more responsibility or a chance to further your education so that you can grow in your field.  The worst that anyone can say is no, you will lose nothing by asking, but could gain so much!

Favorite Aspect of a career in Property Management: In this field, anything can happen... and usually does.  It is definitely not boring!

Most valuable skill needed for a career in property management: Be a team player.  Get to know the strengths of your co-workers and how to work best with them.  You all have the same goal, so use each other to achieve it.  Communicate with others the way you want to be communicated with.  Having a solid sense of humor helps, too.

Why did you join BOMA: In the beginning, for the educational aspect.  As time progressed, for everything else the networking, professional development, community service.  Have you met our members?  We're all pretty awesome!

Fun Fact: I'm obsessed with anything Marvel or Harry Potter.  Basically tell me it's nerdy and I'm all in.

Favorite thing about Charlotte: Somehow in 6 years, Charlotte has become more of a home to me than my actual home.  Maybe it's the food or the people, or the ability for a city so big to still have that small town charm.
